A HAMPSHIRE photographer appeared in court today accused of entering a no-go zone around farmland hit by the foot-and-mouth outbreak.

James Purkiss, 32, also known as Jay Kaycappa, of The Hurdles, Titchfield Common, is charged with contravening a restriction notice put in place near Normandy, Surrey, where the disease was confirmed last month.

Purkiss and fellow photographer Philip Hollis, 44, from Kingston, Surrey, did not enter any pleas when they appeared at South West Surrey Magistrates' Court in Guildford.

They were both arrested and had their equipment seized on August 4 and were later charged under Section 27 of the Animal Health Act.

They face a maximum £5,000 fine or six months' imprisonment if found guilty.

Magistrates released them both on conditional bail and adjourned the case until September 26.
