FLARES set off to deal with an electrical fault at Fawley refinery were to blame for reports of a fire last night.
Worried residents contacted the fire services after hearing sirens and seeing the sky light up around the Esso refinery at around 10pm.
A spokesman for the refinery confirmed there had been an incident but there was nothing to be worried about and that no one was hurt.
Hampshire Fire Service said they were aware of the situation but had not been called out as the situation was under control.
