HAMPSHIRE'S civic boss is pressing ahead with looking into charging for entry to the Great Hall in Winchester.

Ken Thornber said he also wants to look at increasing the 13th century building's use for "commercial purposes," possibly including weddings and receptions.

He has approved a report that looks at the possibility of charging visitors to access the hall, the base of medieval Kings of England and home of King Arthur's Round Table.

The hall, in public ownership since 1642, is currently visited by some 150,000 people a year.

Cllr Thornber's decision day meeting yesterday heard that charging would only be introduced if the visitor experience could be improved.

Among the ideas would be hand-held audio guides, and a more tourist-friendly interpretation of the hall.
