The two men shot dead by officers during a foiled bank raid in Hampshire have been named.

Andrew Eton Markland, 36, and Mark Raymond Nunes, 35, both from south London, were killed while attempting to steal cash from a van transporting money to a bank in Chandler's Ford.

Armed officers fired on the men during the raid outside a branch of HSBC.

One man was shot dead at the scene, with a second later dying in hospital as a result of his wounds.

A security guard received minor injuries in the raid, but no members of the public were hurt.

Following the incident, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) launched an investigation into the shootings.

The watchdog today named the two dead men and confirmed that an inquest into their deaths would open next week at Winchester Coroner's Court.

Mr Nunes' mother, Gwen, has said her son did not deserve to die.

Speaking from her home in Brixton, south London, Ms Nunes is reported to have said: ''My son was a good man. He was very private and independent.

''I'm shaking with rage. We're devastated and need to know what really happened.''
