TEACHERS and pupils are celebrating their best results ever in a landmark year.

Fairisle Junior School has been listed in the top one per cent for reading and maths in the UK.

As reported, the Lordshill school recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Head teacher Peter Howard - who has been at the school for 11 years - is also celebrating a 'good' Ofsted rating.

Mr Howard said: "What we are looking for is constant improvement. The one per cent is down to hard work. Our staff want to go the extra mile both academically and socially.

"We know we are not the finished article and we never want anybody to think we are big headed.

"But we don't let any of the issues or challenges get in the way of hard work."

Inspectors said parents are "confident that their children are taught effectively and nurtured well", the curriculum is lively and interesting, and that pupils are "kind and caring and respect everyone equally."

They added that the school has a "harmonious atmosphere."

The football team represented Hampshire at the South and West Regional Football Championships in Bristol while pupils have achieved the Modeshift STARS Gold Award for work on sustainable travel and clean air.

They also came second in the Accord National Inclusivity Awards for work on preventing bullying and celebrating diversity.

Mr Howard organises an annual sleepover at the school so that parents don't have to pay for a costly residential trip in year four. It costs them just £5.50 for the night of activities - and includes a fish and chip supper and cooked breakfast.

HEADTEACHER: Peter Howard

Fairisle Junior School is the beating heart at the centre of the Lordshill Community, expecting success of everyone who is lucky enough to study or work here.

Expect Success underpins everything we do as a school, and this means having the highest expectations of our children, staff and our wider community.

This year has been a fantastic one for our school. We were visited by OfSTED at the end of February and they judged us as good in all categories, with outstanding personal development.

Our children’s results in reading and maths were significantly above the national average and their amazing progress put Fairisle Junior School in the top one per cent of primary schools nationally. In September our school turned 50 years old and, of course, we took the opportunity to celebrate.

What makes our school special? We have a wonderful staff team and we teach brilliant children. In Year 4 every child plays a musical instrument and many continue this learning into their teenage years. Sport is very important to us and we have, once again, earned the School Games Gold Award.

Our school is expanding and in 2019, our building will be extended. We are very proud of our children, staff and families. They make working here a pleasure.
