RESIDENTS have expressed their shock after a campervan caught fire in a Southampton estate.

Three fire crews and police officers were sent down to the scene yesterday morning at 6.50am to tackle the blaze in Thornhill.

Two crews from Hightown and one crew from St Mary's were able to extinguish the blaze on Linacre Road shortly after 7am.

Daily Echo:

One resident of Linacre Road said: "I heard it all at about 7am this morning.

"There were three engines out there it was quite a shock.

"I heard all the noise and I looked out and saw it alight."

Another resident added: "It was a shock, I didn't expect it.

"[The fire] was put out very quickly.

"When I walked the kids to school there were some police still there."

A spokesperson from Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: "Crews were able to extinguish the fire with one hose.

"Around 40 per cent of the campervan was damaged by the fire.

"They are now investigating the incident with the police."

In a Tweet, Hightown Fire Station said: "[The] fire was contained mainly to toilet due to the closed door. It works in your homes too!"

All three crews left the scene at 7.20am and teams were able to start investigating the scene.

Officials are still unsure what caused the fire and an investigation is on going

The inside of the campervan was burnt and a window of the right hand side has suffered sever damage.

The van was parked in a designated space opposite a block of flats on the road and no other vehicles have been damaged.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary said: "We were called at 7.11am this morning (Monday 31 December) by our colleagues in Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service after they attended a motorhome fire on Linacre Road.

"At this time, the cause of the fire is not known.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

The incident follows a spate of caravan fires across the city.

As previously reported by the Echo, caravans were set alight in a number of different locations throughout Southampton.

They include incidents in Bitterne, Hedge End, Sholing and Midanbury.

The latest caravan fire was December 5 where crews from High Town and St Marys were called to Byron Road in Thornhill.

The caravan was reported alight at 6.25am that morning.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
