AN ICONIC Southampton building, which once housed a strip club, could be given a new lease of life.
The top floors of Harbour House at Town Quay have been put up for rent.
The grade II listed building was last occupied by gentleman’s club, Playhouse who closed in 2015.
Now calls have been made to ensure the historic building will be used to the benefit of Southampton residents.
One of those is Labour councillor for Bargate, Sarah Bogle.
Cllr Bogle said: “We need to make sure that Harbour House is looked after, it is made useful and that we can find a positive use for it. It needs thought.”
Another, Jack Wilson, from tour group SeeSouthampton said: “Southampton needs to think about how to attract tourists from the cruise ships.
“It would be a good place for a viewpoint across the docks.
“It is the perfect place for a more extensive maritime museum because of its location.”
Originally constructed in 1925 the Edwardian Baroque style building, located opposite the Red Funnel terminal, features a distinctive dome, clock faces and a weather vane.
There is an original wooden spiral staircase and similarly, many of the rooms feature their original wooden interior panelling and coving.
Harbour House was extended in 2003 when it was converted into a casino.
It was once the harbour master’s offices for the port of Southampton until the position was abolished in 1968.
Split into two separate venues the property’s ground floor and basement is occupied by CoCo Bar and Lounge nightclub.
There are a number of other bars and restaurant in the area, as well as historic buildings, including Royal Pier.
The space on the market occupies the majority of the 8000sqft building.
Listed by estate agents, Savills the property is available to rent but its leasehold is also for sale.
According to the agents the Harbour House can be used for all purposes subject to planning permission.
