A POLICE investigation is underway after an incident which a man suffered life-threatening injuries while another was rushed to hospital after being sprayed with an "unknown substance".

Hampshire Police say the incident took place in the Gershwin Road area of Basingstoke, sometime between 10.30pm and 10.53pm on Thursday evening.

The 31-year-old victim of the assault was taken to hospital with head injuries and his condition is described as life-threatening.

A second victim, a 58-year-old man from Basingstoke, also received hospital treatment after being sprayed with an unknown substance.

His injuries are not believed to be serious.

Officers remain in the Gershwin Road area making enquiries to establish the circumstances of the incident.
