ALTHOUGH the city of Southampton emerged as winners of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight games on July 8, 1979, it was the district of the New Forest East who took the glory.
Although they came second, the pang of pride came from the fact they ran the 16 game event at Applemore Recreation Centre, Dibden, like clockwork.
The operation involved a thousand competitors guided through the day by a hundred helpers.
