FIVE Hampshire sailors have reached new waves after they were awarded by royalty for their dedication to boating.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal delivered awards to Rob Lamb from Romsey, Peter Etheridge of Bassett, David Howden of Lymington, Phil Pascoe of Hythe and Andy Heather of Chandlers Ford.

They were amongst 47 volunteers in the UK recognised for their exceptional dedication and boating achievements at the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Volunteer Awards.

The awards were presented to the winners at One Great George Street, London, on Friday November 22.

The RYA is boating’s national governing body, while the Volunteer Awards are considered the MBEs of the sport, honouring people in the UK for their outstanding contributions across sailing, windsurfing, motor cruising, inland waterways and personal watercraft.

Rob was a member of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club and raised the standards of race management for the 2012 Olympics, devising rigorous training courses and seminars, and starting the RYA qualification system that remains in use today.

He said: “I had a great day at the RYA Awards in such a beautiful building.

"I feel privileged to have received an RYA National award. I sincerely did not expect to be honoured for simply pursuing my hobby.”

Peter, a founder member of Marchwood Yacht Club in 1963, has supported the club as long-serving treasurer and boat park chairman, while David, who was recognised for many years servicing on the Keyhaven Yacht Club’s Committee and acted as trustee, supported one of the largest cadet fleets in the Solent.

David said: “It was an honour and privilege to represent Keyhaven Yacht Club at the RYA Awards Ceremony and to receive my award from the Princess Royal.”

Andy was honoured for achieving a new clubhouse for Netley Sailing Club, and stepped in after long delays.

Phil was recognised for his work as a member of Hythe Sailing Club (HSC) since the early 70s, which involved planning the dinghy, cruiser racing and rallies calendar

He said: “This award was not only for me but for all members that help out in and around the club.”
