MAJOR opera and ballet shows due to take place at Mayflower Theatre this month have been cancelled.
Welsh National Opera's spring season and the run of Matthew Bourne's The Red Shoes will not go ahead following Government advice to avoid theatres due to the spread of Coronavirus.
Talks are ongoing with companies planning to visit from April onwards.
The statement from Mayflower Theatre bosses says: "Following the latest statement from the Government, regarding social distancing to include “avoidance of pubs, clubs and theatres”, we are in discussions with UK Theatre and show producers about the next steps.
"We will update information on our website and social media on a regular basis. All affected customers will be notified directly, we ask that customers do not call the theatre.
"This week’s performances by Welsh National Opera and next week’s performances of Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes have been cancelled and we will be in contact with all customers directly affected. Please note that the box office counter at the theatre is closed.
"Please note we will be dealing with shows on a week by week basis.
"This is an unprecedented time for us all, we thank all of our customers in advance for their patience and calm approach to the situation.
"We have great shows and events on sale for further in the year and into 2021. We hope to see you back when we can all enjoy inspiring experiences together again with great art, amazing music and first class acting on our stage."
