FIREFIGHTERS have warned Hampshire residents to avoid using sky lanterns when showing support for the NHS and key workers.

It comes as several companies have encouraged people to buy the night sky lamps as a show of solidarity for the emergency services.

Every Thursday at 8pm, the nation has been coming together to clap for carers as they work on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic.

But Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We urge the public to avoid using sky lanterns and to find alternative ways to show their support for the NHS and our 999 family.

"Lanterns are a fire hazard, pose a risk to livestock, agriculture, thatched properties and hazardous material sites."
