THE crippled Greek cargo ship Nymfea was brought to Southampton docks for urgent repairs following a collision with another vessel in the English Channel nearly 55 years ago.
The date was July 21, 1965 when Nymfea had to be beached off Fishbourne, Isle of Wight, and pumped out before the Red Funnel tugs Hamtun and Thorness towed her into the docks.
After entering No 5 dry dock in the Eastern Docks, workers from Thornycroft carried out temporary repairs before she left for North Shields.
