DWARFED by the huge size of one of Queen Mary’s three funnels, a team of workmen repaint the smokestack as part of the ship’s refit more than 70 years ago.
During the previous war years, Queen Mary had carried out an invaluable role as a troop ship ferrying soldiers around the world and strengthening Allied forces as they prepared for the D-Day invasion in 1944.
Now the liner was back in service criss-crossing the Atlantic on the passage between Southampton and New York.
