FORMER Saints striker Matt Le Tissier has come under fire for a post on Twitter about Anne Frank.
Taking to social media, he re-tweeted a picture which read: "The people who hid Anne Frank were breaking the law. The people who killed her were following it."
His re-tweet is now trending on Twitter, and has received hundreds of replies.
Many of those to comment on Mr Le Tissier's tweet have criticised him as they claim he is comparing the Holocaust to wearing a mask.
Guardian newspaper reporter Rob Davies wrote: "Hi Matt, perhaps you're being ignorant rather than deliberately offensive but please don't invoke the Holocaust to support your crackpot views about masks. Thanks in advance."
Matt replied with laughing emojis.
Another to comment was Olympian Chris McDermott. He said: "Murder of 6 million Jews ≠ wearing a mask in public to protect societies most vulnerable."
Twitter user Mark Gray added: "Seriously Matt, this is a new low. Comparing being asked to follow safety rules for the benefit of all is not (and I can’t make this clear enough) the same as living in an occupied country in fear for your life because of the religion you happen to be born into."
In response to the replies, Mr Le Tissier said: "This appears to have got a lot of bots and trolls tweeting me about about masks! Yet I’ve just checked again and still I find no reference to masks anywhere in the original tweet! #strangeworld"

There were also calls for Southampton FC to ditch Mr Le Tissier as a Club Ambassador due to "his views".
The club have been contacted for their response.
