Hampshire's most famous musicians - do you know them?

Perhaps you went to school with one of them or maybe saw them once in Tesco -  these famous musicians all once called this brilliant county their home. 

Craig David

Craig David is a singer, songwriter, rapper, DJ and record producer who rose to fame in 1999, featuring on the single "Re-Rewind" by Artful Dodger. 

Growing up on the Holyrood estate, David’s father was a local carpenter whilst his mother worked at Superdrug. He attended Bellemoor School and Southampton City College.

With 20 UK Top 40 singles, and seven UK Top 40 albums, he's has also sold over 15,000,000 records worldwide as a solo artist.

Thanks to Craig David Southampton is one of the most sung about places in the world. 

Frank Turner

Frank Turner is a punk and folk singer-songwriter from Meonstoke, near Winchester. 

He attended Summer Fields boarding school in Oxford and was later awarded a scholarship to study at Eton College where he met Prince William. 

The musician has eight studio albums and sings about his hometown frequently.

His song, To Take You Home, opens with the lyrics: "I come from the land of the Wessex Downs from the Hampshire hills near Winchester town."

Birdy

Jasmine van den Bogaerde, better known by her stage name Birdy, was born in Lymington, grew up in the New Forest and attended Durlston Court School at Barton-on-Sea.

At just 12-years-old she won Open Mic UK and soared to fame winning both the under-18's category and the grand prize. 

She later went to school at Brockenhurst College just outside of Southampton and whilst studying she recorded her first album with Gareth Henderson at the River Studios in the city. 

She has since gone on to be nominated for Best British Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards in 2014 and she performed at the Paralympics Opening Ceremony.

She last played in Southampton in 2016 at the Guildhall. 

Matt Cardle

Singer and songwriter Matt Cardle was born in Southampton and rose to fame after winning the seventh series of The X Factor, beating boy band One Direction. 

Since then, Cardle has released five studio albums and uncovered a love for the theatre, scoring his first acting role in a production of Memprhis in 2015. 

Carl Barât

Best known for being the co-frontman of The Libertines, Carl Barât was also the frontman and lead guitarist of Dirty Pretty Things and in 2010 debuted a solo album. 

Born in Basingstoke he spent most of his childhood in nearby Whitchurch before attending Brunel University which he later dropped out of.

At university he became well-acquainted with Pete Doherty's sister, Amy-Jo, and through her Barât met Doherty. 

The duo dropped out of university to form The Libertines which included John Hassell and Gary Powell. 

Foxes 

Foxes, aka Louisa Rose Allen, was born and raised in Southampton growing up in the Swaythling and St Denys areas and attended Cantell School.

The singer, songwriter and model has had many chart hits including ‘Youth’, ‘Let Go For Tonight’ and ‘Body Talk’. 

She shot to stardom in 2012 when her vocals were features on Zedd’s single ‘Clarity’ which peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.

In 2015 she broke a world record after performing seven gigs in different cities in under 12 hours, kicking the tour off in Southampton.
