A HOSPITAL worker has been announced as Fareham's local hero.

Ann Frank has won the 'Local Hero 2020 award' by Fareham Shopping Centre.

The 61-year-old was crowned this year's champion after the shopping centre's campaign was launched in the Autumn.

It was inspired by the wonderful acts of kindness during the coronavirus lockdown.

Ann works at Queen Alexandra hospital supporting elderly patients.

Ann's efforts during the pandemic have included a donation appeal for her patients who were unable to see family due to social distancing restrictions.

She volunteered to organise and distribute the donated toiletries, books, magazines and treats to the elderly most in need.

The seemingly never-ending pile of donations has transformed the lives of patients.

Ann was nominated by her daughter Gemma Frank.

Ann said: "“I am thoroughly grateful to have been chosen as the Local Hero this year, however, I really want to highlight that the idea would have been nothing without the kindness and great generosity of the public who have donated so generously to the patients on ward D6."

The shopping centre's campaign to find Fareham's local hero was launched to help recognise people's kindness and generosity, as a community, to overcome challenges

Manager of Fareham Shopping Centre Mike Taylor said: “Ann is a thoroughly deserving winner of the Local Hero 2020 campaign, she is a perfect example of how a kind thought can blossom and transform other people’s lives completely. Putting the wellbeing of others first and supporting those in hospital facing difficult times when they are not allowed visitors is commendable, particularly in what would have been a tough environment during the pandemic. It is a great testament to our community.

He added: "The entries were incredible, and every single nomination was acknowledged and truly amazed us."
