FLY-TIPPERS have been dumping heaps of rubbish in a Southampton car park sparking frustration and anger.

Mounds of “disgusting” rubbish have been piling up at Westridge Road car park in the Portswood area of the city.

The trash which includes old electrical goods, plant waste, buckets and toys lies strewn about in front of several clothes donation bins.

Portswood Road resident, Mike Eldridge, says he feels frustrated that people feel clothing recycling bins and bottle banks are “fair game for a dumping ground”.

The 55-year-old added: “I feel angry for the detrimental effect it has in our neighbourhood.

“It’s disgusting.

“It is not nice to live in that sort of environment.

“The rat population must be having a field day.

“It seems to be a weekly occurrence for the last few months.”

He is now calling on the council to take action to prevent further dumping.

Councillor for Portswood, Gordon Cooper said: “It has been an issue for some time [in Westridge Road] and we are aware of it.

“The council officers responsible work very hard to clear fly-tipping as soon as we are aware.”

Cllr Cooper says that the problem is that the bins are not administered by the council.

He added that fly-tipping is a problem across the city and a recurring problem.

He has spoken with Portswood residents and always looks out for fly-tipping which he reports.

Cllr Cooper added: “We exhort people not to fly-tip.

“We can impose fines for people who do.”

As previously reported, fly-tippers sparked fury by dumping more than 40 mattresses across the New Forest.

They were strewn around public car parks at Matley Wood, near Lyndhurst, Wootton Bridge in Brockenhurst, and Burbush, near Burley in December.

Hampshire residents are urged to report incidents to their local council.
