HAMPSHIRE POLICE recorded more than 35,000 crimes across Southampton in 2020.

Based on figures published by police.co.uk there were a total of 12,086 violence and sexual offences recorded across the year.

In the space of just 12 months, police recorded 6,575 antisocial behaviour crimes in the city.

Here we provide a breakdown of the offences committed in Southampton's policing wards:

 

Bargate: 6,057

The city centre saw the second-highest number of crimes recorded by police.

Almost 27 per cent of crimes were violence and sexual offences - 1,632 in total.

And, around 19 per cent - were antisocial behaviour offences, 1,145.

The area which boasts Westquay and the Marlands Shopping Centres saw 603 shoplifting offences recorded.

However, the least common crimes were theft of a person, 69, and possession of a weapon with 71 incidents.

Portswood: 4,279

Portswood includes the areas of Swaythling, Highfield and St Denys and had the fourth-highest number of reported crimes.

Violence and sexual crimes made up a third of recorded incidents - 1,454.

Antisocial behaviour offences made up a significant proportion with 608 recorded crimes.

Less frequent were theft of a person, 15, and possession of a weapon, 33.

Sholing and Bitterne: 3,306

Sholing and Bitterne include Thornhill, as well as parts of Newtown and Hightown.

There were a total of 1,354 violence and sexual offences incidents recorded by police.

This was by far the largest proportion of any of the city wards at 41 per cent.

Antisocial behaviour crimes tailed at 18 per cent or 595 incidents.

Criminal damage and arson offences were recorded 374 times and made up 11.3 per cent of all crime.

However, based on the police figures there were only 10 recorded incidents of theft of a person.

Shirley and Freemantle: 4,786

The area with the third-highest amount of crime in Southampton is Shirley and Freemantle.

A third of the 4,786 crime were violence and sexual offences with 1,595 incidents reported to police last year.

Antisocial behaviour offences constituted 17 per cent of these with a total of 839

Shirley High Street a popular retail area saw shoplifting 145 offences.

Criminal damage and arson offences were recorded 419 times.

Coxford, Redbridge and Millbrook: 6,419

More crimes were recorded by police in Coxford, Redbridge and Millbrook than any other ward in Southampton.

The area includes the Lordshill and Regents Park areas of Southampton with violence and sexual offences making up around a third of all crimes at 33.9 per cent - or 2,177 incidents.

Meanwhile, 20 per cent of crimes were antisocial behaviour offences - 1,322 incidents in all

At the other end of the spectrum, only 33 reports of theft from the person were recorded last year.

Peartree and Woolston: 3,739

Peartree and Woolston lie "across the water" and consistent with other wards across the city, the most common crime type was violence and sexual offences.

A total of 1,339 reported crimes but at 35.8 per cent.

Antisocial behaviour offences made up 21.1 per cent of crime - 788 incidents.

However, there were only 21 instances of theft from a person, 28 of bicycle theft and 21 robberies.

Bitterne North: 3,047

The policing ward of Bitterne North could be considered the safest ward of Southampton, based on police data.

Bitterne Park, Townhill Park and Midanbury make up the ward of Bitterne North.

With only 3,047 recorded crimes in 2020, the ward had the least amount of incidents.

There were 1,128 violence and sexual offences, 259 public order and 460 anti-social behaviour.

In contrast, there were only 15 robberies and 26 bicycle thefts and 11 thefts of a person.

Bevois: 4,120

The St Mary’s Stadium, Inner Avenue and Northam can all be found within the ward of Bevois.

Most frequently occurring were violence and sexual offences - just over a third of all incidents, 1,407.

Antisocial behaviour crimes were recorded 818 times.

There were 60 possession of weapon offences, 57 robbery offences.

Meanwhile, there were only 33 thefts of a person incidents recorded by police.
