AN ONLINE event is to be held to pay tribute to Sarah Everard and all women who feel threatened on the UK's streets.

A doorstep vigil and online event is to take part today in Southampton at 6.15pm after police told organisers that an in-person vigil could not go ahead due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event was organised after 33-year-old Ms Everard’s suspected kidnap and murder sparked anger over the safety of women on the UK’s streets.

She was last seen in Clapham, south London, on March 3. On Wednesday, police found human remains while searching for her.

PC Wayne Couzens, a 48-year-old Met Police officer, has now been charged with her kidnap and murder and will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court today.

A woman in her 30s arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on bail.

The online event will start with a minutes silence at 6.15pm, and residents are being urged to bring a candle to their doorstep.

At 6.30pm, the group will have a Facebook livestream with a range of speakers from Southampton telling their stories, poems and thoughts about this poignant event.

At the even of the livestream event, people are being encouraged to post pictures of your signs, flowers, and candles on the event.

A statement from the organisers says: "We believe women should feel safe to walk any street at any time.

"Women should not have to clutch their keys, text when they're home, or walk the long way round to feel safe.

"It’s wrong that the response to violence against women requires women to behave differently.

"In Clapham, police told women not to go out at night this week. Women are not the problem.

"We’ve all been following the tragic case of Sarah Everard over the last week.

"This is a vigil for Sarah, but also for all women and who feel unsafe, who go missing from our streets and who face violence every day."
