A GROUP representing thousands of farmers, landowners and rural businesses has described the cancellation of the New Forest Show as "sad but understandable".

The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has reacted to the news that the three-day spectacular has been axed amid uncertainty surrounding the easing of coronavirus restrictions.

The show attracts about100,000 visitors from across the south each year but costs more than £1m to stage.

Members of the New Forest Agricultural Show Society warned that pressing ahead with plans for the event, and then having to call it off, would bankrupt the charity.

Michael Valenzia, regional director of the CLA, said: "The New Forest and Hampshire County Show is a flagship event in the agricultural calendar.

"To hear it won’t go ahead in July as planned is sad but entirely understandable, given the current uncertainty regarding events and potential Covid-related restrictions. The health and safety of everyone involved must come first.

“Many rural businesses rely on the show as an opportunity to demonstrate their fantastic products and services to thousands of people in the region.

“The CLA is supporting its members through this difficult time with the latest advice and information regarding coronavirus. We're also holding regular calls with government officials and lobbying on issues to support them through these uncertain times.

“The rural sector is exceptionally resilient however, having faced more than its share of adversity in the past.

"I have every confidence the New Forest and Hampshire County Show will bounce back and we can’t wait to be part of it once again in 2022.”

The event was due to have been held at New Park, Brockenhurst, at the end of July.

A large number of people took to social media to voice their disappointment at the show's cancellation. But most said it was the right decision, with some warning that coronavirus restrictions could still be in force in July.

One woman posted: "Far better to wait until next year than run the risk of losing money."

Another social media user added: "Shame but correct decision. Can't believe some festivals are going ahead this year. Madness."
