WORK is underway to tear down a Hampshire pub and replace it with eco-friendly housing.

The Players in Totton is being ripped down and replaced with new houses.

Demolition teams have been working at the site in Water Lane.

It comes after civic chiefs gave the green light to redevelop the site earlier this year.

The watering hole which closed four years ago was slammed as an eyesore by local residents.

Daily Echo: Plans to replace The Players pub in Water Lane, Totton, with six eco-friendly homes have been approved by New Forest District Council.

The Wellington Pub Company was given planning permission to replace the pub with six homes boasting zero-carbon technology.

Based on plans submitted to the New Forest District Council the site will be transformed to include four three-bedroom homes and two two-bedroom properties.

The application claimed the technology increased a property's energy efficiency "above and beyond" building regulations.

"It's this type of solution that will be essential to meeting current and future policies in respect of energy efficiency/carbon reduction and meeting the requirements of the upcoming Future Homes Standards," it said.

"This technology is much more efficient than gas and electric boilers and has numerous advantages."

An important local facility until it closed in February 2017, the mock-Tudor pub has been vacant ever since.
