NOT content with owning one award-winning fish and chip shop in Southampton, they have just opened a second!

Family run business Top Catch Fish & Chips scooped the accolade of being named one of the top 50 fish and chip takeaways in the country by Fry Magazine last year.

The original premises opened in Commercial Road in 2016 and Shirley Road followed in January.

It is the highest rated fish and chip shop on Google and also tends to be among the best fish and chip serving restaurants in the city on Trip Advisor, currently sitting seventh alongside the likes of The Jetty and Grand Cafe in the top ten.

Owner Raj Khaira told the Daily Echo: "Everything is cooked to order and the majority of items on our menu are homemade - fish cakes, pea fritters, tartar sauce and mushy peas.

"We fry in Omega sunflower oil, which has less then 4 per cent saturated fats and use sustainably sourced fish.

"We are passionate and driven by making it an enjoyable experience for our customers

"We use the Florigo Frying Range from Holland, which is classed as the Rolls Royce of fryers, and it's the first one in Southampton.

"If you enjoy what you do, then you’ll never work a day in your life."

Customers keep returning to the shops for their top customer service and great food, but the pandemic still hit the business hard.

"We lost all of our trade from Mayflower Theatre due to it being closed," Raj added. "We luckily had a delivery service via Deliveroo that we have built up for the last three years."

Top Catch fish and chips have been proving a popular lockdown dish around the city with takeaways available from both shops and deliveries from the Commercial Road shop available to order via Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Potatoes for the chips are from Buddington Farm in Midhurst and are prepared on site in the shops daily. The chips are fried twice for the ultimate in fluffy centre and crispy exterior.

All the cod and haddock sold in the shops is MSC certified, sourced from a wild catch sustainable fishery. The cod is frozen within four hours of being caught and the haddock is line caught on MS Leinbris and has the skin on.
