SPEED restrictions and a camera have been deployed along a busy motorway diversion after complaints about noise.

The A27 is currently being used regularly as a diversion route for traffic on the M27 as work continues on Smart Motorway upgrades.

The route starts at Junction 7 and runs along the A27 via Church Hill, Mansbridge Road and Wide Lane to Junction 5.

This is said to have been causing "major issues" for West End residents, especially at night, with increased noise and traffic as a result.

Now though, a speed camera has been deployed along the busy stretch, as well as a new 30mph speed limit along Church Hill which is said to be starting from next Monday.

After receiving concerns from residents about the disruption being caused by the diversion, Eastleigh MP, Paul Holmes, began working with Highways England and Hampshire County Council to improve the routes earlier this year.

The MP hailed the new improvements and said they will help reduce speeds to "make it quieter for residents".

He added: “This will also help to reduce the noise and disturbance caused by this problematic diversion.

"I’ve been working on this since January and the camera and new speed limit represent real progress. I am also organising a community meeting with key organisations to look at additional options. We have made some improvements but there is still more to do."

Data from the speed camera, which was introduced this week, will be shared with Hampshire Police.

Paul Holmes is set to host a virtual community event in the next few weeks and interested residents can get involved by contacting the MP's office.
