A TEAM of Southampton University students will be taking on a 96 mile trek across Scotland this summer.

They will be hiking and camping along the West Highland Way during a fundraiser for mental health charity Mind.

Friends Eva, Emma, Jas, Rachel, Joe, Richard and George will be joined by Birmingham students Amelia, Rosie, Sophie, Charlie, Chris, Jack, Ollie and Tom for the event in June.

They hope to raise more than £2,000 as they trek for eight days with seven nights camping.

George Booth told the Daily Echo: "A walk was appealing for us as it allowed us to get out into the nature of the Scottish Highlands working as a team to complete the challenge of finishing the West Highland Way together.

"We know there will be challenges along the way, especially with the nice weather in June bringing out a force of midges to battle against! However, we are really excited to tackle the challenge.

"This year has been tough for everyone, particularly those suffering with mental health issues. Therefore, we believe it is vital that we support such an important charity."

The team are also laying on quizzes for family and friends and a raffle in a bid to up their fundraising.

Their first practice walk at the weekend involved carrying rucksacks to the same weight they will be on the expedition, making sure their boots weren't rubbing and generally getting used to expedition conditions.

Mind, a mental health charity founded in 1946, offers information and advice to people with mental health problems and lobbies government and local authorities on their behalf.
