PORT operator ABP has announced plans to install a second Shore Power connection at the Port of Southampton, continuing its support for sustainable cruising.
Following the recent announcement that Shore Power is one of the leading environmental features that have been incorporated into the design of the port’s new Horizon cruise terminal, ABP has confirmed that its Mayflower cruise terminal is also set to be equipped with the same ‘plug in’ technology.
This announcement was the next step in an ongoing partnership between ABP and cruise operator Carnival UK to enable sustainable cruising from the Port of Southampton.
It follows a £12million investment at the port’s Ocean Terminal in readiness for LNG (liquefied natural gas)powered P&O Cruises’ Iona.
This further development of shore power in Southampton is part of an overall investment of £8.9m which has received support from the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership.
It supports the increasing use of shore power and alternative fuels across the port’s five cruise terminals.
Alastair Welch, Regional Director at the Port of Southampton, said: “We are incredibly proud to be making another significant step as we further develop our sustainable credentials for cruise with Carnival UK here in Southampton.
“This is good news for the port, for air quality and for the future of cruise.”
