100 Southampton care home residents with coronavirus have died in under a year

New figures from the Care Quality Commission have shown that between April 10, 2020, and March 31, 2021, a total of 123 "death notifications" involving Covid-19 were recorded at 21 of the city's care homes.

Following the data's release, CQC bosses have called for "consideration and respect" to be shown to those living in care homes, as well as families and staff affected by loss.

The South East proved to be one of the highest areas for deaths involving the virus in care homes as the CQC's data shows 7,404 death were recorded in the 11 month period.

Across the UK, the CQC has recorded a total of 39,017 death notifications from care homes involving coronavirus.

In Southampton, the care home with the most covid-19 related deaths was Bupa-run Wilton Manor Care Home on Wilton Road in Bargate.

The care home, rated 'good' in its most recent CQC inspection, cares for those living with dementia in need of residential or nursing care.

CQC data revealed that a total of 23 residents died with coronavirus between April 10, 2020, and March 31, 2021.

A spokesperson from Bupa explained that residents living at the home have some of the highest care needs and significant underlying conditions. They also provide a lot of end of life care.

Danni Davies, Regional Director for Wilton Manor care home said: “Thanks to the hard work of our team, our home is COVID-clear and has been since April. However, the pandemic was an extremely challenging time for the care sector and, like others, we sadly lost residents during the pandemic. Our thoughts are with their families."

Kate Terroni, CQC’s chief inspector of adult social care, said: "We have a duty to be transparent and to act in the public interest, and we made a commitment to publish data at this level, but only once we felt able to do so as accurately and safely as possible given the complexity and sensitivity of the data.

"In doing so, we aim to provide a more comprehensive picture of the impact of COVID-19 on care homes, the people living in them and their families.

"It is important to be clear, however, that although this data relates to deaths of people who were care home residents, many of them did not die in or contract COVID-19 in a care home.

“As we publish this data, we ask for consideration and respect to be shown to people living in care homes, to families who have been affected, and to the staff who have done everything they could, in incredibly difficult circumstances, to look after those in their care.”
