TRAMS, improved roads, and a redeveloped waterfront.

These are just some of the things you, our readers, said they wanted to see changed in Southampton.

Many said they wanted to see the city put back on the map.

And one of the ways they thought this could be done was to showcase “our city’s amazing waterfront”.

One reader said: “[We need] better development of our waterside assets such as The Pier, Mayflower Park and Town Quay. It is a huge loss of a fantastic opportunity.”

Hundreds of other readers were also keen to see the city’s waterside improved.

Another said: “We need a proper waterfront where families and anyone can stroll along, with a pier, amusements, doughnuts and candyfloss, fish and chips, grassed areas to picnic along the way. Trouble is it needs a mile long stretch and decent transport alternatives.”

A fellow reader added: “Improve Weston Shore, with a bit of imagination it could be a lovely waterfront”

Another agreed: “[We need a] decent waterfront. Other coastal towns use this as an asset whereas Southampton has nothing!”

And another said: “Get the pier sorted so, so overdue looks like no one cares how bad it looks. A terrible outlook of Southampton when all these lovely ships berth in what used to be a lovely port.”

As part of this thought, some suggested more money being invested into the Town Quay area of the city.

“It has so much potential,” one reader wrote.

However, that was not the only thing they wanted to see changed.

Other suggestions included:

  • Large indoor music arena, like Manchester or the BIC in Bournemouth
  • Better traffic management
  • Improved road quality
  • Bring a lido to the city, like Lymington
  • Bring back trams
  • Bring back ice skating rink
  • Remove the Itchen Bridge toll
  • Redevelop the Toys R Us and Debenhams sites
