SHE was the young wartime bride of the Daily Echo's well-known Chief Librarian of many years Peter Raynes.

Rolande Anne-Marie Raynes, known as Roly, has passed away peacefully, aged 95.

Peter was based in Alexandria Egypt for the latter part of the war which was where he met, and as soon as the war ended, married the young daughter of a French Count, François Foucault de Daugnan.

In 1946, Roly swapped the comparative comfort and warmth of Alexandria for the rationing and cold of post war Britain for the love of Peter.

Though fluent in French, Italian and some Arabic, Roly quickly had to perfect her English whilst coping with a very different environment and the prompt arrival of daughter Marie and son Phillip - all this far away from the support of her own family.

It is a credit to her strength of character, her charm and delight in company that she made a great success of the move.

She went on to teach French at various Southampton primary schools, including St Mark's in Shirley.

Having lived in Lordswood for most of her 75 years in England, Roly moved to her daughter’s home in Bewdley, Worcestershire as she began to need more support.

She leaves behind a legacy of two children, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren together with a host of friends and relatives who will all miss her greatly.
