A SHOP selling perfumes and skin care products has submitted proposals to tighten security after a series of break-ins.

Perfumery and Co, which occupies a Grade II-listed building in Lymington, has applied for planning permission to make its front entrance more secure by fitting a roller shutter security door.

It follows a spate of burglaries in the High Street, including 21 in one month last year alone.

Perfumery and Co's application cites the importance of the building and its significance within the historical context of the town.

"It is particularly important that any installation methods retain as much of the original fabric of the building as possible and should impact on the appearance of the of the building as little as possible," it says.

"Perfumery & Co. has been subjected to several break-ins and goods have been stolen.

"It is therefore considered justified that some form of external roller shutter be installed which will protect the doorway and immediate surround.

"The entire apparatus can be powder-coated to match the existing colour of the shopfront.

"It is intended that the proposed works will provide a visual deterrent and a physical barrier to help secure the shop against any future break-in attempts, thereby reducing the chance of further damage to the building."

The application says other potential solutions have been ruled out, including an internal security grill.

A Public Notice outlining the shop's proposal has been published by New Forest District Council, which will decide the application.
