A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: " Crews from Totton, Redbridge and St Mary’s were called to Garland Way, Totton, at 18:20 on Tuesday (24 August) after a fire spread from the garden of a neighbouring property.

"The fire started from a barbecue and spread from fences and a shed to the roof space and first floor of the Garland Way house.

"Six breathing apparatus, two jets, two hose reel jets and the aerial ladder platform were used to put out the fire.

"Firefighters spent time damping down and stripping off roof tiles before the stop message was received at 20:16."

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has urged people to only set up barbecues on level ground, away from bushes, fences and buildings.

People are warned never to leave barbecues unattended and to keep a bucket of water, sand or a garden hose nearby in case of emergencies

Furthermore, people should dispose of ashes safely and never place them in dustbins.
