CONTROVERSIAL plans for new parking spaces in a Southampton neighbourhood have been approved.

The land at 1 Gover Road in Redbridge is to be turned into a car park with 10 parking spaces.

The site will be used by employees of the nearby commercial vehicle garage run by Adams Morey Ltd.

The company initially put forward plans for 12 parking spaces at the site.

But planners in Southampton said the car park could “only accommodate 10 spaces”.

As previously reported, developers said the car park will help remove any nearby on street parking by Adams Morey staff.

But at the meeting of the Planning and Rights of Way Panel held on Tuesday evening local residents raised concerns over the scheme.

It comes after 20 letters of objections were sent to Southampton City Council.

Speaking at the meeting, local resident Margareth Wright said: “The proposed car park should not be allowed. All residents in Gover Road and the surrounding roads will be impacted.”

Redbridge councillor Sally Spicer added: “We are concerned about the change of use in the future from a car park to maybe an office building.”

Residents also asked councillors to ensure that the site is used for staff vehicles only.

The panel agreed that the site should be closed on bank holidays and should be used as a car park for staff only.

It comes as planning bosses previously earmarked the plans for approval saying the proposals “would be acceptable”.

The car park is expected to be in use between 8am and 6pm Monday- Friday.

After the meeting Cllr Spicer said: ” I am happy with the conditions but disappointed with the outcome. We didn’t want the car park there at all but we are happy that they listened to the conditions.”
