A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of theft from motor vehicle after a suspicious man was seen trying to open car doors.

Police were called at 1.08am today to a report that a man had been trying car door handles in the Mead Crescent area of Southampton.

Officers attended and carried out a search of the area and located a man acting suspiciously in Manor Farm Road.

They searched the man and found a large amount of coins, sunglasses, airpods and a torch in his possession.

Officers also located a vehicle on Manor Farm Road that was insecure and had been searched, but nothing was taken.

A 48-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle.

He remains in custody at this time.

A spokesperson from Force said: "If you witnessed anyone acting suspiciously in the area at around this time, or have private CCTV that may have captured something, please contact us on 101 or online at https://www.hampshire.police.uk/ quoting 44210359449.

"We encourage anyone who has been affected to report it to us so we can build up a bigger picture of the areas being targeted and when.

"We would also like to take this opportunity to remind motorists to make sure you remove valuables from your vehicle and lock it.

"Make sure to physically check that doors and window are locked, especially if you have used the remote to lock the vehicle, then look inside again to make sure you’ve not left anything.
