THE news that HMV will return to Southampton has been well received across the city.
The popular entertainment store was forced to close in 2018 after a 24-year stint in Above Bar Street.
But the company looks set to open a new store in the former Argos unit at 176-178 High Street.
All three city councillors for the Bargate ward have welcomed the news, with Cllr John Noon saying: "This is brilliant and look forward to browsing through the jazz section. Southampton is a great place for live music and a record shop like HMV has been sadly missed."
Cllr Darren Paffey added: "Like many people I’ve got great memories of spending hours browsing HMV, so this will be a really welcome return to the high street and I look forward to getting back there once it’s open.
"This is just the kind of boost our high streets need."
Cllr Sarah Bogle said she echoes her colleagues' comments, added: "I welcome a return of music that can buy in person in our musical and cultural city."

User 'good-gosh' said: "About time. Web buys are hassle and take days."
'mr.southampton' added: "Popped into the one in Portsmouth a couple of months back and was pleasantly surprised. It's pretty good and it's moved with the times.
"It's still got the music, but it's much more about pop culture. I used to love browsing in HMV so would be good to have it back."
