CIVIC chiefs are to decide on plans for a new strip club after they were met with a swarm of objections.

Applicants Playhouse want to use the former Kiss Nightclub in London Road for adult entertainment.

If permission is given, the club could stay open as early as 5am, and it would take over the basement, and part of the ground floor at numbers 35 to 41.

The scheme, which has seen 30 public objections, will go before Southampton City Council's planning committee next week.

"Adding another licensed premises to the London Road area will increase the amount of noise within the area," Jack Barry Moorhouse, of St Michaels Hall has written to the council.

"This area already experiences high levels of noise pollution from the existing licensed premises such as London Brew House and The Giddy Bridge, adding another venue with a later operating hours will further add to the noise pollution in the area."

According to the applicants, the club would create 20 full-time jobs and 50 part-time positions.

It would be an all-seated venue to accommodate up to 120 customers at anyone time, however, numbers would generally be ‘below 50’.

Objector Amna Sharif, of Mayfield Road, has expressed concern over the crime rate in the area.

"I believe that for myself and local residents, this will add to crime in an area that currently suffers from high rates of crime due to licensed premises operating in the early hours of the morning," she said.

"Granting an application for 5am opening hours will add to the levels of disturbance experienced within the area and it would be negligent of the planning committee not to consider this in the application process."

Entry to the club would be controlled by a high door charge, or by booking directly online.

The plans were submitted to the city council at the end of July.

At the ground floor the site comprises a stairway to the basement and floorspace previously operated as a café.

The basement floor area is fully noise-insulated and extends beneath units 35-41 London Road.

It was run under the name Kiss Nightclub until 2018.

Meanwhile, there are flats on the first and second floors above.
