MORE than a hundred roads are set to be resurfaced in Southampton over the next two years, says Southampton's roads boss.

Deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for growth, Councillor Jeremy Moulton revealed the news in a Tweet yesterday.

He claimed that over the next two years, these roads and pavements will be resurfaced or structurally patched.

This comes as several roads are already being resurfaced in the city over the coming weeks by the council's highways partner, Balfour Beatty. 

In its July budget, the council committed an additional £10m investment in resurfacing roads and pavements across the city, contributing to a £22m spend before April 2023. 

Councillor Jeremy Moulton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Growth, said: “This list of roads is just the very start of a wider multi-million-pound programme which will deliver repairs to over 150 roads and pavements across the city by April 2023."

As well as this, as part of a separate initiative, the council’s Pothole Patrol teams have been completing works around the city. 

These teams are being funded by an additional £830k, allocated to establish a network of repair crews. 

Leader of the opposition, Councillor Satvir Kaur told the Echo however: “When labour were in power we doubled the roads budget; while we’re pleased to see a continuation of investment in this area, we hope that any decisions about where this money goes is based on need rather than roads that just happen to have Conservative councillors.”

Residents have in the past highlighted problems with potholes and road conditions in Southampton with the city even being ranked one of the worst areas in the country for potholes last year.

It has also been revealed that Vincent Avenue in Bassett will be resurfaced on October 20 and October 21.

Work will occur between the hours of 7.30am and 5.30pm with the road being closed throughout.
