IT WAS traffic chaos for those travelling through Romsey yesterday after a lorry struck a bridge and became wedged.
The incident, which happened just before 11am yesterday, caused heavy delays in both directions on Greatbridge Road in Romsey.
The road was closed in both directions between Fishlake Meadows and Duttons Road.
Residents described the noise as an "awful screeching and banging" when the lorry stuck the bridge.
The yellow lorry was completely wedged underneath the bridge and the trailer had toppled almost completely on its side, propped up against the supporting wall of the bridge.
Police confirmed that no one was injured and the road remained closed for a number of hours while teams worked to remove the stuck lorry.
One local resident, who lives close to the bridge, told our reporter at the scene: "We heard this awful screeching and banging sound and we knew it was some sort of crash.
"We came outside to see the lorry completely wedged under the bridge, it was like it was going to fall over.
"It's a huge relief that no one was hurt."
A police spokesperson said: "We were called at 10.41am with reports of a single vehicle collision on Greatbridge Road, Romsey.
"A lorry had collided with the railway bridge.
"No one has been injured.
"Road closures have been put in place at the location and recovery is being arranged for the lorry."
A spokerson for the fire service added: "Firefighters from Romsey were called to a lorry on its side beneath a bridge on Greatbridge Road at 10:40 this morning.
"No persons were trapped and no hazardous materials were involved, as further crews from Redbridge, St Mary’s and Cosham were stood down.
"The road was closed by Hampshire Police, as firefighters liaised with Network Rail officers due to the train line on the bridge.
"HIWFRS left the scene and returned to station at 11:55 following the arrival of the recovery company."
The road was reopened at 3.50pm.
