A HAMPSHIRE care home was transformed into a bierkeller so that residents could say "Guten Tag" to the traditional Bavarian celebration of Oktoberfest.

The Kingfishers complex at New Milton staged a host of fun activities including singalongs, beer and sausage tasting and a chance to learn basic German.

Staff decorated the main lounge to help create the atmosphere of a Munich beer hall.

They put up garlands and arranged long tables so the pensioners could sit beside and opposite fellow residents, just like revellers at the real thing.

Chefs baked fresh pretzels which were served along with bratwurst and mustard and Pilsener beer. An accompanying soundtrack featured "oompah" brass band music.

An opportunity to learn basic greetings in German was provided by companionship team member Christina Holliday and resident Florence O'dell, both of whom speak the language.

Companionship team leader Rose Arcellana said: “It all went down very well indeed.

"The residents clearly enjoyed their afternoon of singing and smiles. It was something different and out of the ordinary.”

Pensioner Joan Graves said: “I've been to the real Oktoberfest in the past. Everyone dressed up, had lots of beers and enjoyed the music. I had a wonderful time.

“We're just as fortunate to celebrate it here in our home. For me it brought back lots of happy memories.

“A big 'thank you' to the staff for all their time and hard work in putting this on for us.”
