SOUTHAMPTON City Council organised a solidarity event for the Afghani community in Southampton.

The event took place on Tuesday, 25 October, at Rope Walk Community Gardens.

Over 30 agencies and local organisations provided helpful information, food, activities and games, to create a fun and loving atmosphere for people of all ages to enjoy.

The event, supported by Southampton City Council's Stronger Communities Team, local councillors, and a team of volunteers from the local community and organisations, provided a chance for the local Afghani community to come together and know they are not alone.

Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Alex Houghton, said: "It was a great pleasure to open the Afghani Community event after a time of huge upheaval and trauma for so many people in this community.

"Southampton works hard to be a City of Sanctuary. A huge amount of work went into organising the day, bringing the community together and demonstrating the strength we have in supporting one another through testing times."

Councillor Jacqui Rayment, the Sheriff of Southampton, adds: "Southampton has always been known as a welcoming city for new communities, and only those who have relocated and settled somewhere new will know how difficult that can be.

"Thank you to all the volunteers and organisations who helped put this day together. It is clear that there are so many offers of support out there for those who need it."

Habib Ahmadi, one of the Afghani Community Leaders, said: "This event is so important in making sure that people do not feel alone here. We are the new generation, connected to the world, and I am delighted to be part of this event."
