WHETHER you are looking for a gym now or considering it as a New Year's resolution – Southampton has plenty to choose from.
But sometimes, the chain establishments can put people off, and are often overcrowded which isn't for everyone.
So we have put together a list of the best independent gyms the city has to offer.
They are:
Project_R, City Gateway, Swaythling
Those behind Project_R say the gym has been designed with clients in mind.
It offers completely private training sessions under expert supervision using state-of-the-art equipment.
Coaches cap client sessions to just three an hour. This gives you uninterrupted access to the room.
One reviewer said: "The quality of his service cannot be beaten."
We Go Long (formerly Hurtbox), Bond Street
You can access this gym in two ways: virtually from the comfort of your own home, or from the comfort of the studio in Southampton.
The gym promises that in either situation, you are guaranteed to not only get a great workout, but one that’s specifically designed to help you improve your fitness over longer durations.
"Lovely place and lovely owners," said a reviewer.
Prosapien, Austin Close
This establishment is run by Louis Olrog, a former student of Solent University.
It offers extensive workout plans for clients, as well as sports massage services and home training.
One reviewer said: "Louis and the team do a fab job of motivating you to work hard."
Southampton Barbell, Manor Industrial Estate
There's not a lot you can't get at this gym.
It offers all sorts of training, as well as sports massage, dry needling, myofascial taping, sports injury assessment, myofascial release and tools, articulation and HVT (c7-s1), and spinal adjustment.
"Great selection of equipment for all ability and friendly knowledgeable staff," says one review.
Crossfit Solent, near Ocean Village
This is the only CrossFit specific gym in Southampton.
It is a 6,000 sq/ft fitness facility equipped with men’s and women’s changing rooms, and has been successful since its launch in 2012.
A reviewer said: "Great atmosphere and place to work out."
Spartans Gym, Millbank Gym
This gym's website says it all: "This is a place where we rigorously train both body and mind. A gym that from the moment you step into it you will be amongst like minded people who are prepared to train to their limits.
"Spartans has areal old school spit and sawdust feel to it."
A reviewer said: "Friendly atmosphere, good music and brilliant equipment."
