THE communities of Southampton came together to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our country.

Hundreds of people gathered in the city centre on Remembrance Sunday, as the parade passed through Guildhall Square.

It ended at the Cenotaph in Watts Park, where a service was held with some of the city's most prominent figures.

Archie Parsons, from Southampton Royal British Legion, said: “This year marks one hundred years of the Royal British Legion.

"The past continues to have a great impact on the people of Southampton and, on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, we reflect and give thanks to all those that played their part in bringing peace and those who helped to re-build our great city to what it is today.

"We shall be forever thankful to them.”

A two minute silence was observed, with the beginning marked by the Last Post.

Speeches were given by representatives of the the Army, Navy, RAF, the city council, and various religions including: Sikh; Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Bahai and Christian.

To conclude the service, dozens of wreaths were laid at the foot of the Cenotaph.
