MYSTERY surrounds the sudden 'closure' of a hotel in the heart of Southampton.

Mercure Dolphin in High Street has cancelled all of its reservations after "an unforeseen exclusive booking".

Those with rooms between now and next March will instead be moved to another nearby hotel. Rooms cannot be booked online until March 1 2022.

The Echo received a tip-off that the hotel has signed a Government contract, but a spokesperson for the Home Office said they cannot comment on this.

A sign on the door of the hotel says: "We apologise for the short notice and inconvenience.

"The Mercure Southampton Dolphin Hotel has now contracted an unforeseen exclusive booking.

"If you currently possess a reservation here at the hotel, we have secured accommodation at an alternative hotel, close by.

"In the event that you have not received direct contact informing you of changes to your booking, or you would like to cancel your reservation please contact us.

"We thank you for your understanding and cooperation."

The Echo has contacted the hotel for further information.
