A YOUNG woman who received mental health care at Southampton Hospital as a teenager has created a fundraiser to provide care packages for patients on paediatric wards across the UK.
Sedona Jamieson, 20, from Hampshire, started Sedona's Care Packages to “give something back”.
She said: “I struggle with anorexia and BPD, and I was in hospital for three years, but on and off before that. I was in Southampton hospital quite a lot and I started the care packages in the summer of last year.
“The first ward I sent the packages to was a ward in Winchester. I have been creating the packages all the while I have been in hospital.
“I always wanted to give something back to the wards that I was on. The idea of the care packages came to mind because I can do something that can help people.
“Making a difference to someone is really important to me.”
Since the inception of Sedona's Care Packages in 2020, the packages have been distributed to Southampton General Hospital and the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, and Sedona has even attracted interest from further afield.
Sedona said: “At the moment, the packages are just for paediatric patients in hospital for mental health issues. The packages I make are all quite similar, but I’m hoping to do different ones for different things people struggle with.
“The packages usually contain a stress toy, a word search book, a pencil with a quote on and motivational quote cards, plus a card from me as well.
“I have probably made about 30 packages in total which have gone to lots of different hospital wards, and they have been well received.”
A spokesperson from Southampton Children’s Hospital said: “Sedona’s care packages make a huge difference to the young people who receive them, many of whom are at a difficult time in their lives.
“We’d like to thank Sedona for turning her own experiences into a positive and helping other young patients in a similar situation to herself.”
