AN independent specialist card shop where staff go above and beyond to help their loyal band of customers celebrate any obscure occasion imaginable has been named the Daily Echo’s Retailer of the Year 2021.
Best Wishes of Bishop's Waltham scooped first prize in our contest to find the place our readers most like to spend their hard-earned cash or just enjoy a browse.
Echo readers nominated their favourite Hampshire shops in their droves and the entries were whittled down to ten finalists.
Best Wishes, which recently celebrated its tenth birthday, scooped the top prize ahead of a host of other independent shops dotted around the region, as well as the likes of John Lewis. The finalists included Tilley’s Bakery in Hythe, Ambient Objects in Shirley, Oakhaven Hospice Children’s Charity Shop in Lymington and Obelisk Food and Wine in Woolston.
Owner Russell Payne told the Daily Echo: "We're absolutely delighted, particularly that so many of our brilliant customers have gone out of their way to vote for us. We want to say a huge thank you for all their loyal support.
"We didn't believe it at first. This is just great and beyond all expectations."
Established in 2011 by Russell and Yvonne Payne, the business quickly became a thriving part of the community and was soon on the awards trail. Within 18 months of opening, it was shortlisted for an award at the Retas, otherwise known as the Oscars of the greetings card world, among other accolades.
Local residents unable to get out can take advantage of a card delivery service and customers are also offered a loyalty scheme, as well as receiving a birthday card on their special day.
Best Wishes of Bishop’s Waltham is the long-running sponsor of the local football team and staff organise the nativity at the town’s annual Christmas Fayre as well as an Easter Egg hunt for 1000 local school children.
Trader
Who goes above and beyond? There are so many traders in our corner of Hampshire who are providing their customers with the best possible service. At the Daily Echo, we are starting up a new feature where we will highlight one exceptional trader per week who goes the extra mile for their customers.
