RESIDENTS have warned of a "vigilante response" in an area of Southampton as fly tipping is turning the neighbourhood into a "rat-infested eyesore".

Those living in Woolston have spoken out about their frustration following "daily tipping" of household waste along their streets.

Some of the areas affected include Tickleford Drive and Hawkhurst Close.

Residents have already hit out at fly-tippers with "take to the tip you pigs" having been written in spray paint across some of the filth.

Those who live there are calling for CCTV to be installed as "vigilante residents" warn that "there will be trouble if the culprits are seen tipping".

Southampton City Council has confirmed that they are "looking at the option of CCTV in some hotspot areas".

One resident, who has asked to not be identified, said: "Fly tipping has become critical with daily tipping of household waste turning residential areas into a rat infested eyesores.

"Vigilante residents warning there will be trouble if the culprits are seen tipping as the council don't seem to be taking any action in warning of prosecutions or placing CCTV to catch these tippers.

"This will all end with someone being injured if trouble breaks out as residents are at the end of their tether.

"With Christmas coming and families and friends visiting it is highly annoying and embarrassing to live amongst this rubbish on our streets.

"We are private residents who pay council tax to deal with this sort of nuisance and warnings should be sent to all residents to make them aware they cannot carry on dumping their waste in this way.

"The councillor for the area has been informed and advises this is a common problem all across Weston which is just down to laziness as we have a waste disposal site half a mile down the road."

Councillor Rob Harwood, said: “You can sense the very real frustration that the residents of this area are clearly feeling towards the individuals who are dumping rubbish, rather than disposing of it in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible way by taking it to the Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Millbrook.

"However, I would urge residents not to try and take the law into their own hands in any way.

"We have recently added a new Environmental Protection Officer to the team that investigates fly tipping incidents, and are looking to recruit another.

"The team are proactively looking to secure convictions against the small minority who persist in illegally disposing of waste. Anyone who has any information about the identity of any individuals who committed this, or any other fly tipping incident, should email flytipping.investigation@southampton.gov.uk

“We’re also looking at the option of CCTV in some hotspot areas.

"It's also for this very reason that we’re removing the booking system from the Millbrook HWRC from December 27, for a trial period of three months, which will hopefully help to have a positive impact on the number of fly tipping incidents we’ve been seeing.”
