A MAN has been arrested after a Southampton schoolgirl was sexually assaulted.

The 12-year-old was walking along Wimpson Lane with a friend at 7.30am on Tuesday December 14.

A man unknown to her approached her and her friend and sexually assaulted her.

Police have now arrested a 19-year-old from Southampton on suspicion of sexual assault.

He remains in custody at this time.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "Yesterday, we made an appeal for information, witnesses and dash cam footage. We continue to appeal for this.

"We urge anyone who was in the area of Wimpson Lane or Romsey Road between 7.20am and 7.40am on Tuesday morning to get in touch with us.

"The girl continues to be supported by specialist officers.
