BOXING Day: a day synonymous with polishing off Christmas treats, enjoying a refreshing walk and watching your favourite films and TV shows.
The national holiday is commonly believed to be a tradition that started in the Middle Ages, and was penned as a national holiday by the Victorians.
Boxing Day is widely celebrated across the country, with various events taking place over the years.
Today, we're taking a look back at marvellous memories of Boxing Days gone by.
Cooper's Arms, Millbank Street, Northam, Southampton, 1912
These two photos are both from Boxing Day 1912, and although they are not from an event, they are still an integral part of the city's history.
The Northam and Chapel areas of Southampton were prone to severe flooding at the time, being so close to the River Itchen.
Although most of the area was cleared away as part of the slum clearances, the Cooper's Arms remained and was renamed The Joshua Tree.
Weston Shore Boxing Day dip
Brrrr! A group of Scouts plunged into the icy waters of Weston Shore in 2006.
On December 26 2006 ten of the bravest Scouts, Explorer Scouts, leaders and their friends stripped down to shorts and shirts and were cheered on by a crowd that gathered on the beach as they ran into the sea for a quick dip.
It was also a competition to see who could stay in the water the longest.
The crowned winners, who stayed in the water for a couple of minutes, were Peter Horsley, Iain Molyneux-Dicks, Laura Compton and Jessica Weaire.
Shoppers hit the high street for bargains in 2014
Tens of thousands of shoppers descended on Southampton high street and West Quay on December 26 2014 to bag the best Boxing Day deals.
Doors opened at 6am for several major retailers with eager customers queuing for hours beforehand.
In 2014, department stores like House of Fraser offered designer goods at a fraction of their usual price, while Next and Marks & Spencer launched discounts of up to 50 per cent on sale items.
Scouts take the plunge
Going for a swim on Boxing Day seems to be a popular tradition amongst the Scouts!
The annual event’s fancy dress theme in 2013 was superheroes – an apt choice as only comic book characters would be courageous enough to take on the challenge.
The Boxing Day dip was part of an annual competition between Itchen North and South troops.
The winnning team was the one that had the highest number of members fully submerged in the water.
