A HAMPSHIRE bus operator is using lonely hearts-style adds in a bid to slam the brakes on a staff shortage.

Morebus is playing Cupid by attempting to ensure that "lonely" buses in the New Forest area are introduced to their perfect partner.

The company, part of Go South Coast, is determined to keep services running by attracting new employees.

A spokesperson said: "Morebus has launched a novel initiative designed to entice potential drivers to join its team at Lymington.

"Along with many other businesses across the UK, Morebus has experienced a shortage of drivers over recent months, mainly due to the effects of the pandemic.

"Now the operator has taken to displaying lonely hearts requests on the back of buses serving the town."

Richard Wade, the company's general manager, added: "We want to continue providing high quality, reliable, bus services in Lymington and are doing everything we can to minimise any disruption for our customers.

“Like the rest of our industry, we are going through a challenging time in terms of recruitment, so we thought it was time to do something different.

"Our buses are displaying lonely hearts notices in the hope that those living in-and-around the town will feel they are the perfect match and get in touch with us.”

The notices say: "Lonely bus desperately seeking new driver. SINGLE decker, with drive, would like to meet new companion for travel."

They add that people replying to the ad "must like" New Forest views, country roads and shift work, as well as being available for full training.

Richard added: “It’s a bit of fun but has serious intent.

"We are a well-known local employer, offering a host of benefits to out prospective colleagues, and this is a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to try something new.

"Those with a customer service or retail background will be particularly welcome.

"And it doesn’t matter if people haven’t driven a bus before - we just want to see if they have the aptitude, and then we’ll provide full driver training.”
