A CITY centre road has been closed to allow trees to be cleared.
Barfield Close in Winchester was closed on Monday, February 21.
Workmen from Winchester City Council will be clearing trees that have been affected by ash dieback disease that overhang the road near to Chesil Lodge retirement complex.
Ivan Gurdler, principal tree officer at the council, said the work was necessary to make the area safe.
He said that it would need to take place this week before birds and bats begin to nest.
He said: "We have notified local residents and expect to be finished by Friday."
A council spokesman said: "Tree works started today in Barfield Close after a survey showed a number of Ash and Sycamore trees are a safety concern. The road will be closed to traffic and a diversion route will be in place.
"We’re directing people to contact naturalenvironment@winchester.gov.uk if they have any concerns."
The park and ride bus service has been diverted, with passengers advised not to wait at the Barfield Close stop and wait at the road junction opposite the leisure centre instead.
