George Burley believes he has left Saints with a squad still capable of a top six finish.

After just over two years at St Mary's, Burley this week left the club to take over as Scotland boss.

There have been so many changes in the boardroom since Burley took charge at Saints, and he's also had to deal with having to rebuild his entire squad twice after having to sell players to keep the club afloat.

But Burley believes if the new manager can have better luck with injuries than he had, then another play-off place is still possible this season.

He said: "I would like to thank everybody for the support I've had - from the fans to the board and everybody else at the club.

"I have happy memories and the club have treated me very well.

"I've had messages from Leon Crouch, Lee Hoos and Lawrie McMenemy saying they would welcome me back at any time, which is good.

"I appreciate that and of course I will be keeping a close eye on the results and hopefully the push to the top six.
